Amidst allegations of corruption, the federal government yesterday relieved the acting Accountant General of the Federation, Chukwuyere Anamekwe of his position.
It was reported that the acting Accountant General was replaced two weeks ago with a former Treasury Single Account, TSA Director, Mr. Okolieaboh Ezeoke.
Further reports had it that Mr. Anamekwe was removed from office following allegations that he was being probed by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC and that the federal government was not comfortable with his revelation that it was borrowing to pay salaries.
It would be recalled that Anamekwe was appointed as acting Accountant General of the Federation, AGF on May 22 following the arrest of former Accountant General, Mr. Ahmed Idris by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC over corruption allegations.
The acting Accountant General also made the controversial revelation on government borrowing to pay salaries on June 14, 2022.
The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation (HoCSF), Mrs. Folasade Yemi-Esan was reported to have issued a circular to the effect that the federal government is currently searching for a new Accountant General of the federation
“Commencement of the process of appointment of a substantive Accountant-General of the Federation”, the HoCSF directed permanent secretaries to forward details of eligible directors on Grade 17 to her on or before 4:00 pm on Wednesday July 6, 2022”, the memo was quoted to have said.
The memo was also quoted to have stated that the qualification of level 17 officers qualified for the position.
“Those who have attained the position of Substantive Director (Grade 17) on or before January 1, 2020 and are not retiring from the service earlier than December 31, 2024 are eligible to participate in the selection process while officers undergoing disciplinary proceedings are excluded”, it stated.
