National Broadcasting Commission, NBC, has warned Broadcast stations against violation of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, NB Code by airing derogatory and inciting statements from featured guests.
This was made known in a statement signed by Director General of the commission, Malam Balarabe Shehu Ilelah, who reiterated that the primary functions of the media are; to educate, inform and enlighten the public on issues bordering on National Development, order than to incite people.
The commission implored broadcasters to advise guests on their platforms not to polarise the citizenry with divisive rhetorics in driving home their points.
It advised stations to ensure that every News or Current Affairs programme conforms to the provisions of the Nigeria Broadcasting Code, NB Code, and take their social responsibility requirements seriously.
The DG therefore, reeled out parts of the NB Code to broadcasters for clarity.
They include: Section 5.3.3(b) which states that, “The broadcaster shall, in using political materials for News and Current Affairs programmes, avoid Hate Speech, Inflammatory, Derogatory and Divisive remarks or Allusions; Section 5.4.1(f) that stipulates,” The broadcaster shall not transmit divisive materials that may threaten or compromise the indivisibility and indissolubility of Nigeria as a sovereign State; and Section 5.5.6, stating that, “The broadcasters shall have a delay mechanism to guard against possible undesirable content, respectively.
The commission then warned that every broadcast station is responsible for the content it transmits, and shall be held liable for any content in violation of the NB Code.
