Five persons lost their lives in a boat mishap while trying to sail from Kogi state to Anambra through the River Niger.
While getting the distress call concerning the incident, the Anambra State Police Command, swiftly deployed a rescue team to the spot of the incident and not less than 30 people were rescued from the river within Anambra West local government area.
It was gathered that the incident happened on Sunday morning and the victims are mostly women and children.
However, the deceased persons could not be identified as of press time, they were said to hail from a riverine part of Kogi State, and were traveling to Onitsha for various businesses.
An eye witness said, “Early this morning, there was a boat that capsized at River Niger. Some of the victims are from parts of Kogi state and Mmiata Anam in Anambra East local government area.”
The Anambra State Police Public Relations Officer, Tochukwu Ikenga told journalists yesterday in Awka, “The situation is under control.
“Our marine operatives on getting the distress call about the incident, responded swiftly. We were able to rescue over 30 of the passengers alive and recover the five lifeless bodies in the depths of the sea and the capsized boat.
“Preliminary information revealed that the boat was from Kogi state, conveying goods and passengers before the unfortunate incident occurred.
“Meanwhile, the cause is yet to be ascertained, as the investigation is ongoing”.
