NDLEA says drugs hawked like ‘pure water’ in Edo State

Edo State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency, (NDLEA) on Tuesday lamented a boom in illicit drug business in the state, saying that drugs are being hawked in the state like sachet Water.

Callys Alumona, the state Commander of the Agency, who spoke to Journalists in Benin City, Edo State said that Edo State ranked in the first position in the illicit drug activities disclosing that the Agency had visited some hotspots for the sale of illicit drugs in Benin metropolis, noting that the drugs are being hawked like pure water in the areas such as Akpakpava, Iyaro, Mission road, Ore Oghene quarters

According to him, “We have been to Ihama and Country home Hotel Roads and Other hotspots for sale of illicit drugs in the state. What we saw was not pleasing but shocking and unfortunate, drugs are being hawked like pure water in these areas. This experience has led us to begin to raid some of these places identified. We raided Ihama about three weeks ago three times and arrested so many of the drug users. We have also apprehended teenage girls including harlots into the use of drugs, and we will not relent until we get rid of the users in the areas mentioned.”

He said that about 14,000 tonnes of Cannabis sativa have been destroyed in the state while about 153,000 Kilograms of Cannabis and Other assorted drugs have been mopped up from the streets, adding that the situation in Edo State as far as drugs were Concerned, calls for urgent action with a view to ensuring that those responsible for the evil activities are brought to arrest.

Recall that the police in Benin City Edo State have in the recent times raided some hotspots where illicit drug users carry guns at gunpoint allegedly rob unsuspecting members of the public

SP Chidi Nwanbuzor, the Police Spokesman in the state who spoke to Journalists however assured that the police will do everything possible to ensure that those responsible for the nefarious activities are brought to arrest disclosing that though no arrest was made, stressing that the police have mapped out strategies to ensure that they are brought to arrest.

Meanwhile, a legal Practitioner in Benin City, Edo State, Barr Friday Osakpamwan Ogieriakhi has called on the security operatives to redouble its strategies to ensure that Criminal activities in the ancient Benin City are brought to the lowest ebb, especially during nightfall

Ogieriakhi who spoke to Journalists in Benin City said “We are no longer sleeping with our two eyes closed because of the hoodlums at every nooks and crannies and in this regard, I am calling on the security operatives to redouble its strategies to ensure that these hoodlums are brought to arrest. Benin City, Edo State used to be very calm but I suspect that these hoodlums are from Other States and security operatives should help us flush them out for us to be sleeping with our two eyes closed.”
