The employment market for Nigerian youths is about to receive a boost as the federal government is set to create 3.7 million jobs annually through joint efforts with the private sector in several priority areas with high job creation potentials.
Minister of Youths and Sports Development, Mr. Sunday Dare, stated this Tuesday in Abuja at the official launch of the Nigerian Youth Employment Action Plan, NIYEAP, 2021-2024.
According to the Minister, the development of NIYEAP 2021-2024 followed the expiration of NIYEAP 2009-2011, which despite its modest achievements has outlived its relevance in view of current realities.
NIYEAP, which was developed with technical assistance from the International Labour Organization, ILO, and support from ECOWAS and the Spanish Development Agency, is to promote decent jobs for youths.
It is also expected to contribute to the achievement of the job creation target of the National Youth Policy(2019) to create 3.7 million jobs annually.
Mr Dare noted that the goal of the plan is to address youth employment challenge in a comprehensive and coordinated manner by mobilizing the full energy and capacity of the youth to achieve national development goals, with a view to minimizing the risk to national security and development posed by rising youth unemployment and underemployment.
The NIYEAP, which identifies strategic lines of action the “four Es”: Employability, Entrepreneurship, Employment, and Equality and Rights, is expected to contribute to address the challenge of youth employment through effective implementation.
