NO fewer than eight persons have died in a stampede on Tuesday morning at an event center along the Rumuodara axis of the East/West Road, Obio/Akpor Local government area of Rivers State.
A source privy to the development said the incident happened at an office allegedly owned by Pinkcoin, an online blockchain digital asset designed for giving charity.
According to the source who identified herself simply as Blessing, Pinkcoin had invited everyone who registered with them in Obio/Akpor LGA to come and redeem their Christmas palliatives on Tuesday.
Blessing said the incident happened when the huge crowd that turned up could not be controlled while struggling to get access into the premises of the firm.
Confirming the report, the state Police Public Relations Officer, SP Nnamdi Omoni, said the situation was under control as at the time of filing this report.
The state Commissioner of Police, Joseph Mukan, has also instituted an immediate probe into the unfortunate incident with a view to ascertaining the circumstances and bringing persons found culpable to justice.
Mukan used the opportunity to warn residents to always be safety conscious and maintain safe distancing at public events.
