…group says Buhari has failed in his responsibilities

About 100 armed men yesterday stormed Arewa House, the venue of the security review meeting, organized by a Coalition of Northern Groups, and attacked participants.

The hoodlums, who brandished dangerous weapons, stormed the venue of the event at about 11 am and carted away valuables such as mobile phones, and destroyed property worth millions of naira.

The event, which was attended by retired military officers/police officers, religious leaders, traditional rulers, various women, youth, and trade associations, was aimed at creating a synergy between communities and government security agents to design a uniform approach to the current security situation in the north, especially following the kidnap of about 300 students in a government school in Katsina State by bandits.

Addressing newsmen, chairman of the coalition, Balarabe Rufai described the attack as unfortunate, describing the sponsors of the thugs as “enemies of the north and Nigeria.”

Rufai explained that just as the meeting was kicking off; sponsored armed thugs stormed the auditorium after subduing the civil guards at the gate. They came in with machetes and other weapons and started attacking people.

“Majority had to escape through the window. We are very confused about what actually transpired. I want to assure the people that this objective we have of reviewing the security situation in the north where people are being killed on a daily basis will continue. We cannot fold our arms and watch.

“Whoever is behind this attack (hoodlums) is an enemy of the north and Nigeria. This attack won’t deter us. We are going to have another meeting in another place and discuss how to complement the government’s effort in bringing out a security outfit that is multi-sectoral, where people will come in. We intend to call it Arewa Security Marshall,” he said.

Similarly, the spokesman of the group, Abdulaziz Suleiman, in a press statement, said the “hoodlums overturned tables, shattered glasses, attacked guests and officials, injuring several people and smashing vehicles parked in the premises.

“It is disturbing that a battalion of armed thugs can stroll across the streets of Central Kaduna wielding dangerous weapons without the intervention of security agents. Security only arrived hours after the thugs had left.

“It is quite obvious now that some powerful forces are benefiting from the current security situation and would do everything for it to continue.”

Suleiman, however, pledged the commitment of his group to ensure the safety and security of the north and its people.

Meanwhile, the Joint Action Committee of Northern Youth Associations, JACOM, said President Muhammadu Buhari has failed in his primary responsibility of providing security and welfare for the people.

The group condemned the kidnapping of students of Government Science Secondary School in Kankara, Katsina State, urging the state and federal governments to rescue the students in the shortest time and avoid a repeat of the case of the Chibok girls.

They also demanded that President Buhari address the country on the kidnapping of the boys.

Reading JACOM’s communiqué at the end of the meeting, the convener and chairman, Communiqué Committee, Muhammed Abubakar and Kumaga Terkula, called for the restructuring of the country in order to pave way for community policing.

“We recognize the need to restructure Nigeria and review the requirements and allow responsible Nigerians and communities the right to apply for firearms to protect themselves,” they said.
