– As Okagbare sets to challenge Fraser-Pryce for Olympic Gold
SPORTS Minister, Sunday Dare has expressed confidence that track and field athletes are set for a positive outing at the Tokyo Olympic Games expected to start soon. Dare’s confidence is hinged on the form athletes displayed during the recent Athletics Federation of Nigeria Olympic Trials held at the Sports Complex of Yaba College of Technology, Lagos last week.
The minister said, with and they the form and the recorded times by the athletes in the All Nigeria National Olympics trial are flashes of what to expect and are looking good to go. The Ogbomosho born Minister of Youth and Sports noted that the athletes are prepared and ready for the ruthless execution of their skills and will also be handed opportunities to attend few competitions in the coming days.
Meanwhile, Blessing Okagbare who would be heading to Tokyo Olympics in the best form of her life after running the second fastest time in the world this season stated that she is hopeful of replicating her national trials form at the Tokyo Olympics proper after winning the women’s 100metres final, beating her personal best time of 10.79 seconds to run 10.63 seconds at the All Nigeria National trial.
Okagbare expressed delight at the success record and stressed that she feels like the younger Blessing again after setting a new record time. She added that she is happy and certainly the performance is a confidence booster ahead of the Tokyo Olympics. The 32-year-old saw her 10.63 seconds time tie with Jamaican Shelly-Ann FraserPryce’ best time in 2021. The 10.63 time is also a new African record. Only Florence Griffith Joyner who holds the world record at 10.49 seconds has run faster.
