As Nigeria joins the rest of the world to mark the International Civil Aviation Day, Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, has urged stakeholders in the aviation sector to keep faith with the Federal Government’s roadmap, which he said would serve as a catalyst for a comprehensive overhaul of the sector.
As contained in a statement issued on Monday by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, James Odaudu, Sirika explained that the roadmap would further reposition the country as an air transportation hub of Western and Central Africa.
While affirming that safety and security remain the epicenter of government policies in the sector since the inception of the current administration, he noted that the government’s efforts had been lauded by all, including the International Civil Aviation Organization, ICAO, the International Air Transport Association, IATA, and the African Civil Aviation Commission, AFCAC.
He further appealed to key players in the industry to join hands with the government to ensure the realization of the lofty objectives of the roadmap for the benefit of Nigerians and all users of the nation’s airspace.
“The roadmap includes the establishment of a national carrier, establishment of a Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul facility, the concession of some airports, the establishment of an Aviation Leasing Company, amongst others,” Sirika added.
He reaffirmed Nigeria’s sheer commitment to the ideals of the ICAO and other aviation bodies of which it was a member.
The International civil aviation day which is marked annually on December 7, was established in 1994 as part of ICAO’s 50th Anniversary activities.
The purpose of the date is to help generate and reinforce worldwide awareness on the importance of international civil aviation to the social and economic development of states.
