…Bandits having field day in my constituency, Kebbi Rep cries out

…Says they left message that they will come back after their earlier attack last week

DESPITE efforts being made by the federal government and the security agencies to curb rising cases of killings and general insecurity across the country, bandits yesterday invaded Federal Government Girls College, Birnin Yauri, Kebbi state, killed a policeman, abducted five teachers and an unspecified number of students. The bandits, who rode on motorcycles, were reported to have stormed the school from neighbouring Rijau forest in the early hours of yesterday, during which they overpowered the mobile policemen guarding the school.

Confirming the incident, the Kebbi State Police Command said five teachers and yet to be ascertained number of students were abducted during the attack. The state Police Commissioner, Adeleke Adeyinka-Bode in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria said, “The truth is that the attack took place and five teachers have been taken away, four male and one female but the number of students abducted are not yet known.” “The attack took place around 12pm and during the crossfire between the police and the bandits, some students were injured and one police officer was also injured and another was killed.” According to the police boss, the school principal who should provide details of the number of students was still in shock.

“The principal is not in the best state of mind as I am speaking to you now because parents have trooped into the school searching for their children, so the principal cannot make a proper head count call now,” he added. It would be recalled that the Kebbi school attack yesterday is the latest in a series of mass abductions in schools across the northern parts of the country since 2020 with more than 700 students abducted by bandits for ransom within the period.

Meanwhile, a member of the House of Representatives representing Yauri/Shanga/ Ngaski Federal Constituency of Kebbi state, Hon. Yusuf Tanko Sununu has cried out that bandits were having a field day in his constituency. Briefing newsmen on the attack and abduction of students and teachers from the Federal Government Girls College, Birnin Yauri, Hon. Sununu said the pervading insecurity in his constituency and Kebbi state is worrisome.

“A week ago, we had another calamity when bandits mentioned by eyewitnesses numbering about 250 to 300, each with AK-47 rifles and using very strong motorcycles, came into my constituency. “They had a field day and operated for more than eight hours going house to house, room to room, collecting money, handsets, motorcycles and cattle. “That led to a massive influx of internally displaced persons at the headquarters of the emirate in the town of Yauri,” he said. He further disclosed that the bandits had left a message after the last week attack saying that they would be coming back.

“Taking it seriously, some people refused to go back and in the early hours of today (yesterday), they repeated what they had done earlier and they came into the constituency, somehow around 10.30 am or thereabout. “They were able to have access after strong fights with some security guards, police guarding the Federal Government College, Birnin Yauri and they made their way into the school. “They succeeded in kidnapping some teachers and an unaccounted number of students. Some of the students and security men are currently receiving care at the General Hospital, Yauri following gunshot injuries,” the lawmaker added.
