Dr. (Mrs.) Ebelechukwu Obiano was born in Onitsha, Anambra State Nigeria. She hails from Ogbunike in Oyi LGA and is married to the Governor of Anambra State, Chief Willie Obiano
from Aguleri in Anambra East Local Government Area of the state.
She attended Lagos Premier Day School Lagos State and Okija Community Secondary School in Anambra State, where she got General Certificate of Education (GCE). She earned Diploma in Mass Communication from University of Lagos, and Bachelors’ Degree in History and International Studies from Lagos State University (LASU). She later obtained Associate Degree in real Estate from Lone Star College, Houston, Texas, United States of America; and attended further trainings in Human and Material Management in Nigeria, Europe and the USA.
Dr. (Mrs.) Obiano has worked in many reputable organizations and held sensitive positions in the course of her career. Between November 1991 and May 2010, she worked in various capacities in National Petroleum Investment and Management Services
(NAPIMS), a subsidiary of Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation (NNPC) as Catering Supervisor, Corporate Procurement Officer and Welfare officer. On several occasions, she represented NAPIMS as material officer in France, USA and UK on Bonga Field development Project of SPDC.
Before her husband became Governor in year 2014, Mrs. Obiano had been involved in charity programmes helping the less privileged. She undertook church welfare projects and was a marriage counsellor among other humanitarian endeavours. It is therefore no surprise that as First Lady of Anambra State she set up an NGO, Caring Family Enhancement Initiative (CAFÉ) in August 2014 to advance her charity programmes.
Through CAFÉ, Dr. (Mrs.) Obiano is fulfilling life-long passion of caring for the needy, and also uses the platform to support the governor in delivering good governance to Ndi-Anambra., CAFÉ has since inception lived up to its aims & objectives and has sustained its vision as beacon of sustainable empowerment for women and the less privileged in Anambra state and beyond as well as wellbeing of the whole family.
Dr. Mrs. Obiano’s commitment to charitable courses never wavers, through CAFÉ she undertakes various projects and programmes. These include; CAFE Housing for Indigent Widows where she has built twenty-eight 2-Bedroom bungalows built free and handed over to beneficiaries across the State. She also built seventeen CAFÉ Toilets in rural markets to promote hygiene in rural communities.
Dr. Mrs. Obiano has trained and empowered over five thousand, five hundred indigent widows, women and youths in various skills under CAFÉ Skills Acquisition Training programmes. These include: Hair Dressing and Beauty Therapy, Fashion Design, Soap Making, Cake Baking and Confectionery, Telephone Repairs, and Community Health Services. The beneficiaries were supported with equipment and start-up stipend.
She equally provides free Prosthetic limbs to physically challenged persons now numbering over two thousand two hundred and fifty-five and donated free wheel chairs to many more. She facilitates free surgeries to children with congenital abnormality of Cleft lip and Cleft palate where over 100 have benefitted and that earned her recognition as Smile Train International Goodwill Ambassador. Mrs. Obiano also sponsors the care and treatment of mentally challenged persons at a 77-Bed Home in Nteje in collaboration with the State Ministry of Women and Children Affairs. The facility has successfully treated, rehabilitated and discharge over 100 inmates.
In recognition of her leadership qualities and contributions to human development, Mrs. Obiano was awarded Honorary Doctor of Letters DDL by Chukwuemeka Odimegwu Ojukwu University, Igbariam, Anambra State on November 17, 2018. She has also received several local and international awards. The latest recognition of Osodieme is the 2021 Brent Council London and Mayor’s Certificate award for excellent work and support for persons living with Sickle Cell disorder, the Sun Publishing Limited, Most Supportive First Lady of the Year 2019; Woman of Excellence Award 2019 by AgroBiz organizers of Top-Ten African Awards in New York, United States of America. Other awards include: Zik Prize for Leadership in Humanitarian Services 2017, Primetime Reporters First Lady of the Year Award 2016, Irish Red Cross Award for Humanitarian Work 2017, Most Valuable Governors’ Wife Award 2016/2017, Excellence Award 2016 by Nigerian Women of Atlanta Georgia, United States. Osodieme is also the UNICEF/EU Water Health and Sanitation (WASH) Ambassador for South East Nigeria as well as the Eminent Peace Ambassador of the United Nations etc.
On why she is committed to helping the needy, Dr. Mrs. Obiano said, “there is something in me that abhors seeing people in anguish. That is why I do what I do.” In another breath she observed, “Wherever and whenever life is touched, government has succeeded.”
