As part of coordinated efforts aimed at ensuring the completion of the East West Road by December 2021, the Minister of Niger Delta Affairs, Sen. Godswill Akpabio, has issued advisory notes to Governors of the Niger Delta region and the Ministries of Transport and Works and Housing.
Akpabio issued the advisory notes on Tuesday in Abuja at a ‘Round Table Meeting of Counterparts on The Complementary Programme For The East-West Road’.
Akpabio tasked the ministry of transport to continually monitor the road when completed to ensure that it does not get dilapidated and amount to a waste of government resources.
He further urged the counterpart team to monitor the activities of contractors handling the project to ensure that work goes on progressively towards meeting the December 2021 target.
“Under my watch, the target is to deliver completely Sections I-IV of their East-West Road on or before December 2021 and see to the award of Section V(Oron-Calabar).
“Our conviction is clear. We need your cooperation to succeed. We are determined to succeed and shall spare no effort to secure your collaboration.
“In this pursuit, I am certain that your institutions most especially the state will be the biggest beneficiary of the outcomes of the program,” he added.
Permanent Secretary of the Niger Delta ministry, Dr. Babayo Ardo in his remarks, noted that up to three-third of the ministry’s budget for the next year has been earmarked for the project.
Babayo further recommended that the East-West road be made a model, adding that the ministry is at the final stage of awarding a consultancy for the development of access management and mitigation action plan for the road.
It would be recalled that the counterpart team was inaugurated on November 12 via zoom owing to the Covid-19 pandemic, and has held prior meetings in Delta and Akwa Ibom states
