AHEAD of the second phase of #EndSARS protests across the country scheduled for December 7, 2020, a civil society organization, New Initiative for Credible Leadership, NICREL, has alleged that the move is aimed at discrediting the government of President Mohammadu Buhari.
NICREL, at a press briefing in Abuja, yesterday, called on the youths in the country to refuse being used as agents of destabilization.
According to the executive secretary of NICREL, Reverend Steven Onwu, the sponsors of the #EndSARS protest have unleashed a wave of negative propaganda against Nigeria and have backed this up with an intensive campaign of fake news directed against the military.
Onwu, who described the sponsors of the #EndSARS as unpatriotic, said they misrepresented the government response to the protests, and also deny the positive interventions of government and the programs that have been implemented and being implemented to make things better for Nigerians.
“The damage done to the country in the course of these remains unquantifiable as we wake up each new day to learn new facts about the extent of hardship that the #EndSARS protests have visited on Nigerians.
“What we find tragic is that the damage is still being done. The sponsors of #EndSARS have unleashed a wave of negative propaganda against Nigeria and have backed this up with an intensive campaign of fake news directed against the military.
”This is why they have lied about massacres taking place at Lekki in Lagos State and Oyigbo in Rivers State. They lied about people being disappeared. They lied about people getting shot. They lied about the root cause of the protests. They misrepresented the government’s response to the protest, and they deny the positive interventions of the government and the programs that have been implemented and being implemented to make things better for Nigerians. They hid the source of the funds from which protesters were paid and fed, and they lied about the true agenda that is driving their participation in the protests.
“These lies, distortions, and misinformation have now been packaged and presented to Nigerians and the world as if they were the authentic accounts of the situation in our dear country. International news organizations have been mobilized and commissioned to push these false renditions of events that are now being framed to present President Buhari in a bad light,” he added.
