Nigeria’s long Jump sensation Ese Brume has set a new African mark in women’s long jump after she leapt an astonishing 7.17 metres at the Chula Vista Festival to shatter Chioma Ajunwa’s 25-year African record.
Ajunwa’s record of 7.12 metres set a quarter of a century ago gave her Nigeria’s first and so far, only individual Olympics gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games.
Three-time African champion Brume took six tries to obliterate that mark with the leading jump in the world this year as she took gold at the Chula Vista Festival.
Brume posted distances of 6.83m four times before leaping to an African record on her very last attempt, finishing ahead of Brittney Reese who leapt 7.10m to win silver and Chantel Malone who took bronze with a mark of 7.07m
It marks yet another milestone for the Delta native who last year in Doha, became the first Nigerian to win a medal at the World Athletics Championships since 2013 when she claimed bronze in the women’s long jump event with a mark of 6.91m.
Brume has long been seen as one of Nigeria’s real medal hopefuls at the Tokyo Olympics which gets underway in July and her latest exploits will only serve to reinforce belief and expectations of fans back home.
