Former two-term member of Kogi State house of assembly under the platform of Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Hon Friday Sanni Makama has defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC.
Making his declaration Thursday at the national secretariat of APC, Hon. Makama refuted claim that he was pressured to ditch his former party.
The lawmaker who represented Igalamela/Odolu state constituency in the Kogi State House of assembly between 2011 and 2019 said he reached the decision after due consultations with his constituents followimg the prevailing circumstances and the situation on ground in his former party, the PDP.
“As a politician, you weigh the options, the variables, I mean the alternatives that are available for you to be able to chart your course and chart the course of your people. The option left for me now in the circumstance I found myself is the APC and I have decided to join it,” he said.
Hon. Makama was a vocal opposition voice in the Kogi assembly who had rough times with governor Yahaya Bello by openly criticising his policies and leadership style.
He was suspended on controversial circumstances by rival members of the assembly loyal to gov. Bello but his suspension was overturned by the supreme court.
Speaking on his sour relationship between the State governor, Makama said he had put all that behind him following a truce brokered by the chairman caretaker committee of APC, gov Mai Mala Buni.
“I think that is a thing of the past. I had it rough with my governor in the past but the intervention of the national chairman of APC has since cemented a good relationship between me and my governor. As I speak with you, we are brothers. And I can assure you that with the current intermediary role by the national chairman of APC, I am very sure that rough road will not come between me and him anymore,” he explained.
When asked for his position on the presidential ambition of Yahaya Bello, Makama said he totally endorsed it.
“The presidential ambition of gov Yahaya Bello is totally endorsed by me. Why did I say it, His excellency, Yahaya Bello has created history in our State. In Kogi State, this is the first time a kogite built up the courage to say I want to become the president of the federal republic of Nigeria. With this history, I have no alternative than to go with him. Afterall, there’s no Igala person contesting with him. So long as everything that belongs to me and the people of Igala is given to me, I have no problem with the presidential ambition of Yahaya Bello and I have to support him,” said the lawmaker.
