Several months ago, allegations of official siphoning of funds meant for counter terrorism were made and was reeportedly confirmed by the president in a viral interview with a foreign media organisation. Thus, there are major questions bordering on probity and accountability that the present government of President Muhammadu Buhari administration.

A critical assessment shows that contrary to its claims, the present government is not fighting corruption but it is in the same bed with corruption. There are several nagging publicly asked questions about cloudy circumstances surrounding the anticorruption campaign of the present administration but the government does not have answers to them. The national reserve is depleting but no one is explaining in detail what productive and profitable economic investments it is being channeled into.

Why is it taking eternity for this government to tell Nigerians where it kept recovered stolen public assets from corrupt persons? Where is the so-called recovered Abacha loot? What was it used for and what are the details? Till date, there is no clear explanation to this effect. One of the most frequently asked questions by Nigerians is related to defence spending that Major-General Babagana Monguno (rtd), President Muhammadu Buhari’s National Security Adviser (NSA), reportedly referred to months ago.

It was then alleged that a staggering sum of $1billion approved by President Muhammadu Buhari for procuring weapons to fight terrorists and bandits under the leadership of the immediate past service chiefs has not been accounted for and no weapon has been seen by the current service chiefs to work with. The media quoted him as saying that, “We don’t know where the money went to. The president has done his best by ensuring that he released exorbitant funds for the procurement of weapons which are yet to be procured, they are not there… Mr. President is going to investigate those funds.

As we are talking with you at present, the state governors, the Governors Forum have started raising questions in that direction. $1 billion has been released, that and that has been released, and nothing seems to be changing. “So I assure you that the president will not take this lightly. The funds are nowhere to be found and the weapons have not been seen and the newly appointed service chiefs have declared that they have not seen the weapons,” he said. Where are all the trillions borrowed by this government? What did it do with them? There is no doubt that the Buhari administration does not need to wait till the end of its tenure to give account of its stewardship to Nigerians. We share the view that it has already written its own history in public glare and posterity will pass its harsh judgment accordingly.
