It is highly insensitive to abruptly commence the implementation of the new tariff that was reportedly suspended as contained in the Federal Government and labour’s agreement. This is nothing but a sustained elite conspiracy to continue to make life difficult for the ordinary Nigerians while the castrated union leaders continue to bark without any modicum of courage to bite.

If the back and forth meetings being held by the organized labour and Federal Government are anything to go by, then we agree with the widely held view that labour is dead in Nigeria.

Gone are the days when the organized labour fought for the masses and public interest.
It was last year when this government suddenly woke up and jerked up the prices of PMS and electricity tariff.

The leadership of organized labour protested and publicly took a position rejecting the move. Since then, the two parties have been holding fruitless meetings with the Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, and the team of government.

Rather, the masses have continued to suffer under excruciating economic hardship as a result of wild policy actions of the government. What Nigerians have witnessed is a toothless leadership of the organized labour that is always in bed with the government of the day.

The official explanation from their last early thus week is quite esoteric and irritating. According to Mr. Ngige, the labour has been given time to go and study a report before it makes any decision on the nebulous position of the government.

According to him, “It is a technical report, so they needed further investigation of the report by their own technical research team. The Technical Committee on electricity tariff has not finished. We expect the report in a week’s time. So, cogently, we are reconvening on 22nd of this month to take both reports,” Ngige noted. The labour leaders quite agree with this position as well. Thus, their next meeting will hold February 22.

Under the prevailing economic situation, the high prices have remained the same and the masses have been bearing the burden while the endless meetings between the government and the NLC-led organized labour continue infinitely.

We think it is highly insensitive to abruptly commence the implementation of the new tariff that was reportedly suspended as contained in the Federal Government and labour’s agreement. This is nothing but a sustained elite conspiracy to continue to make life difficult for the ordinary Nigerians while the castrated union leaders continue to bark without any modicum of courage to bite.

It remains fallacious the claims by some of the unpatriotic elements who are advising this government that the biggest problem of our economy is wastage in subsidizing essential economic services. We must state that no country in the world runs a zero subsidy-free economy.

The resumption of the new electricity tariff and PMS price hikes is ill-timed, insensitive and unfair to the people and should be reversed immediately.
