… Urges mothers to rise up, speak with one voice

Chair of the Board of Trustees of the United Nations Voluntary Trust Fund for Victims of Trafficking in persons and Executive Chairman of Roost Foundation, Dame Julie Okah – Donli, has expressed sadness over the gruesome murder of a 300 level Student of the University of Ilorin by some unknown rapists and called for a comprehensive investigation that will bring the murderers to book.

She said Nigerian mothers are crying with a loud voice in an agonizing manner demanding justice not only for the latest victim, but all those that were killed in a similar manner.

Okah – Donli stated this in Abuja while reacting to the spate of incessant rapes and killings of innocent Nigerian female students in the Country.

It would be recalled that the 300 Level student of the University of Ilorin, OlajideOmowumi Blessing, was brutally raped and murdered by unknown persons at her sister’s residence in Tanke area of the Ilorin, the Kwara state capital. The sad development came barely one month after another female graduate student of the University of Uyo, was raped and murdered by a fake employer.

Speaking shortly after massive sensitisation of some Schools in Abuja by the Roost Foundation, the UN Board Chair said efforts must be made to save the present generation of the girl child from the antics of rapists who are now on the prowl.

“The situation is getting out of hands. Some months ago, it was the case of an under  graduate female student of the University of Benin, Few months later, a promising female graduate of the University of Uyo who was in search of a job, lured, raped and murdered. Now, it is another heart-breaking story of an under – graduate student of the University of Ilorin”

“Certainly, this is too much for Nigerian mothers to bear. Who have we offended and who shall save our children? I believe this is the time for mothers in Nigeria to rise up, set aside political and ethnic sentiments and speak with one united voice and say enough is enough of the raping and killing of our daughter”

“It appears that because justice is not seen to have been served or adequately served in those cases in the past, the hearts of those ungodly wicked rapists are hardened and they have continued to move around with impunity raping and killing our young girls

“Mothers, let us arise and embark on a serious advocacy to the Law Enforcement Agencies, State and National Assembly, the Executive arm of Government, the Judiciary and other critical stakeholders in the Country in order to gather the required will to end the ceaseless rape and killings that is gradually becoming the order of the day” she cried out.

Roost Foundation has sensitized over 3,000 students in secondary institutions across the Federal Capital Territory and Jos, Plateau State within the last one month as part of its reloaded massive sensitization of youths on the incidence of Human Trafficking, Irregular migration, sexual and gender based violence
