“It is rather suspicious and sad that in Nigeria, all gallant officers who made genuine efforts to in concerted efforts to end insurgency and banditry do not live long enough to exhaust their patriotic zeal or accomplish their mission. This is one of the mysteries lurking behind the protracted fight against terrorism in the country and why the problem of insecurity persists without reprieve”

Last weekend, Nigeria was thrown into a painful and sorrowful mourning mood when the sudden death of the Chief of Army Staff, Lt Gen Ibrahim Attahiru, and ten other officers killed by a military plane crash in Kaduna was announced. This was the third time in a row that a military plane conveying some of the country’s finest officers crashed with no one on board surviving.

This should raise eyebrows and immediate investigative action in a professional and ethically sound military. Attahiru and other service chiefs were appointed by President Muhammadu Buhari about four months ago with a marching order to arrest the drifting or the already drifted security situation in the country that has left agonies and unspeakable grief in the hearts of many citizens.

We mourn the tragic death of the gallant officers who dedicated their lives to the service of the country and eventually paid the ultimate price through death. We pray that may their souls rest in peace, and may God almighty comfort and console the respective families that are mourning and sorrowing over the demise of their loved ones who died in active service to their fatherland. It is sad that every day in Nigeria, people mourn because daily, reports assail media followers about daily killings by insurgents, bandits, kidnappers, suspected criminal herders, and highway armed robbers.

This tragic occurrence is particularly painful because from news items sniffed from the military authorities, the late Attahiru who inherited a highly politicized Nigerian Army amidst controversial and fierce fight against insurgency, banditry, and other upscale security issues threatening the unity of the country was working very hard from behind the scene to reposition the army and reclaim the current battered glory of the Nigerian Army and military.

But like many other Nigerians, he never lived long enough to actualize such dream. It is rather suspicious and sad that in Nigeria, all gallant officers who made genuine efforts in concerted efforts to end insurgency and banditry do not live long enough to exhaust their patriotic zeal or accomplish their mission. This is one of the mysteries lurking behind the protracted fight against terrorism in the country and why the problem of insecurity persists without reprieve. We therefore join other well-meaning Nigerians to demand for a thorough investigation in order to find out the immediate and remote causes of the unfortunate fatality.
