Enugu State chapter of Association for the Protection and Enthronement of Human Rights has sent a petition to the Inspector General of Police over alleged human rights abuses by policemen in Enugu state.

In the petition signed by Eze Attah, the group said the Enugu state Police Command has been brazenly breaching the recent directives of the IGP on tinted glasses and called on the police boss to call the Enugu State Commissioner of Police to order.

Part of the petition reads: “We are concerned citizens in Enugu state whose fundamental human rights are being trampled upon by the police command in the state.

“The police in Enugu state since yesterday Tuesday 16th 2021 embarked on acts contrary to and in total violation of the directive of the IGP in respect of tinted glass permits. They were forcefully – with guns terrorising and jumping into cars and removing tinted glasses from vehicles even when the owners presented valid and genuine tinted glass permits issued by the Nigeria Police Force.

“The police officers claimed they are not interested and do not take directives from the IGP but from their commissioner of police who issued the order to them.

“The people are now wondering if the CP is running a different police force outside that which is led by the IGP.

“To the best of our knowledge, the Directive by the IGP is not to grant further approvals for tinted glasses and not to crudely clamp down and remove the already approved tinted glasses. Why must things in the South East be different?

“As protests and court actions are being contemplated by the concerned residents, it is necessary as law abiding citizens that we alert the IGP and the police authorities in Abuja on this untoward attitude by the CP.

“We do this with a call to allow civility reign in Enugu state police command before things get out of hand.”
