It is no longer a joke that Ndigbo is desirous to have the 2023 presidency zoned to the people of the South East.
As a result, two Igbo interest groups, Southeast for President, SEFORP, and Igbo Leadership Development Foundation, ILDF, have sworn that should the political parties in Nigeria, especially APC and PDP fail to zone the presidential ticket to Ndigbo, they will resort to legal action.
The pro-Biafra groups on Wednesday specifically called on the All Progressives Congress, APC, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP as well as other Nigerian political parties to respect the Federal Character Act and zoning principles as enshrined in their constitutions and zone their presidential tickets to the Southeast region of the country.
Addressing newsmen in Enugu on Wednesday, the national coordinator of SEFORP, Rev. Okechukwu Obioha and national chairman of ILDF,  Dr. Godwin Udibe, the groups issued a 30-day ultimatum within which the major  political parties must zone their presidential tickets to southeast region or face a legal action compelling all the registered political parties to zone their presidential ticket to the Southeast zone.
“We have observed some ongoing subterranean maneuverings in the
political parties to short change the Southeast in the presidential contest in
2023.
“We wish to make it abundantly clear that any arrangement, be it at political stakeholders or political party levels, which denies the Southeast of presidential slot in 2023 will be resisted by every possible legal means
“We call on Nigerian Political Parties to respect the Federal Character Act and zoning principles enshrined in their constitutions and zone their presidential tickets to the Southeast Zone in clear, unambiguous and unequivocal terms within the next thirty(30) days, failing which we will take out a legal action for
appropriate reliefs but in particular for the order of court compelling all the registered political parties to zone their presidential ticket to Southeast Zone”, the spokesman of the groups, Udibe said.
The groups however, charged Southeast politicians to impress it on the leadership of their various political parties to zone their lresidential ticket to the region as soon as possible.
“We wish to specifically advise the PDP to jettison the illogical argument of it is seeking to zone its presidential ticket to the North in 2023, on the basis that the party has produced two presidents from the South with a cumulative tenure of about 14 years and a president from the North with a short-lived tenure of about two and half years.
“The ultimate benefits of zoning are for the six geo-political zones of Nigeria. Once a zone has taken its turn. it is only natural for another zone to take the position in the next round of presidential election,” Udibe said.
He therefore called on all Nigerians of good conscience to rally support for the Southeast zone for the sake of equity, justice and fairness.
According to him, “The political actors especially should embrace practices which will unite the country and not those that will further widen the gulf of division. We all need to consciously work tor the peace and unity of this country.”
