New President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Prof. George Obiozor has said that Ndigbo are not at war with the larger Nigeria but rather are a peaceful people that go about their business without antagonising others.
Obiozor said this Wednesday during his first press conference after his election in Owerri at the Ohanaeze, secretariat, 7 Park.Avenue, Enugu.
The president general who was referring particularly to the outlawed pro-Biafra group, IPOB and its leader, Nnamdi Kanu, said his team would ensure that they do everything humanly possible to make Kanu and his group to drop their agitation for a separate state and embrace peace.
He said that Nnamdi Kanu must listen to Igbo leaders, pointing out that Biafra agitation was beyond his capacity to actualise.
“The Igbo nation is not war with Nigeria and has nothing pending before any institutional authority that demands a separate existence from Nigeria.
” Nnamdi Kanu must listen to some of us for several reasons. The fact and reality are that the issues of Biafra are above and beyond his capacity to decide,” he said.
Obiozor enjoined that all utterances that are capable of putting Ndigbo in present and immediate danger or harms way must be avoided to forge peace in Nigeria
The President General said that Ndigbo were nation builders and not wreckers or destroyers and as such, Ndigbo must apply diplomacy to ensure that they get their due and fair share in Nigeria.
He therefore appealed to Nnamdi Kanu to toe the part of honour and listen to reason in his quest for a separate state.
Obiozor said Ndigbo must at all times stress on what binds Nigeria together rather than what divides her, pointing out that in the field of sports, laurels are won through united efforts.
The Ohanaeze boss said they will try at all time yo see that Ndigbo are secured wherever they are, noting that no progress ensues where there is insecurity.
“Igbo security is a priority for our team. The most urgent and imperative need of Ndigbo today is security. The security of Ndigbo in Nigeria and beyond has become a compelling primary responsibility and of a serious concern for Ndigbo.
“At home, in Nigeria, the story of insecurity of Ndigbo has reached incrementally dangerous level of existential threat. Ndigbo are indeed in terms of security, the most vulnerable and victims of violence throughout Nigeria,” he lamented, pointing out that the insecurity even goes beyond Nigeria to other nations.
