Stoke City Manager Michael O’Neill has disclosed that former Super Eagles skipper Mikel Obi has told him he hopes to get Stoke City back to the Premier League from where he wishes to quit the game.
Mikel today joined Stoke City as a free agent after he cancelled his contract with Turkish club Trabzonspor earlier this year.
He is the English Championship team’s fourth signing ahead of the new season and previously played in the English second-tier league with Middlesbrough.
Manager O’Neill said: “We’re delighted to bring John to the club.
“His playing career speaks for itself and underlines his calibre as a player.
“We spent four hours talking and he made it clear he wants to get back into the Premier League and finish his career there and hopefully he can do that with Stoke City.”
Mikel won two Premier League titles as well as both the UEFA Champions League and Europa League with Chelsea.
