Anayo Modestus Onyekwere popularly known as Kanayo O Kanayo was born on March 1, 1962, in Nru Umueze Oboama, Mbaise Local Government Area of Imo State, Nigeria to Mr. Donatus and Mrs. Isabel Onyekwere.
Kanayo O Kanayo had his primary school education at Saint Joseph Primary School in Mbaise, his secondary education at Boys Secondary School Mbaise, Imo State completing it at Technical College Aba in Abia State, Nigeria, and proceeding to the University of Lagos where he graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Mass Communication and a Master’s Degree in Political Science from the University of Lagos.
Kanayo O Kanayo started out as a guest artist in the NTA Enugu drama series after graduating from the University.
He joined Nollywood in 1982, out of a pure desire to bring smiles to people’s faces, going on to star in the movie ‘Living in Bondage‘ as ‘Chief Omego’. The movie brought Nollywood and, by extension, him into the limelight. In 2017, in collaboration with Globacom Communication company, he became involved in the seasonal TV program, ‘Professor Johnbull’ in which he plays The Professor.
Since his coming into the industry, he has starred in over 250 Nollywood movies including, ‘Circles of Doom’, ‘Nneka’, ‘Billionaires Club’, ‘Rituals’, ‘Tears for Love’, ‘Living in Bondage’, ‘The Coven’ and ‘Blood Money’ and has since moved on from just acting to Producing, Directing and Filmmaking, he runs a media consultancy outfit, and owns a cybercafé in Lagos.
The actor who is usually associated with acting ‘Occultist films’ has been on set with other A-list actors like Olu Jacobs, Pete Edochie, Liz Benson, Omotola Ekehinde, Genevive Nnaji, and Justus Esiri.
Kanayo O Kanayo is a United Nations Ambassador and has been honored by the Nigerian government as a Member of the Federal Republic, the highest award offered to celebrities who have contributed to the growth and development of the nation.
In 2011, he contested to represent the people of Ahiazu/Ezinihitte Mbaise Federal Constituency at the House of Representatives, and in 2013, he received a political appointment from former President Goodluck Jonathan as a board member of the National Institute for Hospitality and Tourism Studies. Kanayo O. Kanayo owns a Mentoring Academy, KOKMA with which he seeks to inspire the youths to aspire for greater things.
In 2017, Kanayo O Kanayo went back to school to obtain a Law degree from the University of Abuja.
Kanayo O Kanayo is currently married to Nneka Onyekwere, and they have three children, Uloaku, Einstein, and Kosisochukwu
Kanayo O. Kanayo is a recipient of several awards, including the 2005 Most Prominent Actor in Nigeria at the African Movie Academy Awards; 2006 Best Actor in a Leading Role at the African Movie Academy Awards and 2006 Best Actor in Nigeria at the Africa Magic Viewers Choice Awards.
