NIGERIA Bar Association, NBA, Makurdi chapter, has disclosed plans to institute legal action against the federal government over its failure to protect the lives of Nigerians.

It would be recalled that a budding legal practitioner, Moses Udam, his pregnant wife and a blind octogenarian was on Tuesday night killed at Agboughul, a suburb of Makurdi.

State Chairman of the association, Justin Gbajir, who disclosed this during a courtesy call on Governor Samuel Ortom in Makurdi yesterday, said the Nigerian government had failed woefully in the protection of lives and property as enshrined in Section 24 sub (2) of the Nigeria Constitution.

The NBA, therefore, urged the federal government to declare a state of emergency on security and sack all the service chiefs.

They also called on the government to declare Fulani herdsmen a terrorist group while also establishing a Victim Support Commission with Victim Support Funds, as well as set up a North Central Development Commission.

“NBA will on Monday, December 21, boycott court activities. We urge the government to always obey the rule of law and extant laws, anything short of this is unacceptable,” Gbajir said.

Responding, Governor Ortom reiterated his call on the federal government to grant a license to Nigerians to own guns and protect themselves from invaders.

He listed the number of recent killings to include the killing of an agro-ranger who was allegedly murdered by herdsmen in a forest and his decomposing body discovered 10 days later.

“In Adaka community, Makurdi Local Government Area, herdsmen went after an agro-ranger and when they could not find him, they killed his wife and another one had his father killed. How long shall we continue to be killed and the federal government will remain silent?

“The federal government should stop pretending. How can you proscribe the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, who have not killed people and fail to proscribe Fulani herdsmen who kill?

“It can end insecurity if it wants to, but they are not prepared to do so. We want definite action from them. This government is a complete failure on security and the economy and I have facts to justify my claim.

“A day of reckoning is coming for those who have refused to take action. Citizens should also learn to defend themselves,” Ortom said.
