Kogi state government has budgeted the sum of #130,546,068,026 for the 2021 fiscal year to address identified critical programs and projects that will have a direct positive impact on the people of the state.

Governor Yahaya Bello presented the state budget titled, ‘Budget of accelerated recovery’  to the state of House of  Assembly at a primary session on Tuesday in Lokoja, saying that the total budget outlay of #130,546,068,026 for the 2021 fiscal year is divided into recurrent revenue of #82,464,412,854, representing 63.17% and capital receipts of #48,081,655,172, representing 36.83%.

Governor Yahaya Bello stated that the budget package for the year 2021 represents an increase of #7,575,110,017 or 6.16% over the 2020 final budget which was #122,970,958,009.

Explaining, the governor said that the state government 2021 fiscal policy is directed, among others, at improving the efficiency and effectiveness of spending; achieving a better balance between capital and recurrent expenditure; achieving greater control of the wage bill, and directing capital expenditure on critical infrastructures such as agriculture, health, road, education, secure, water and youth development.

Bello stressed further that “the specific financial objectives of Kogi state is effective allocation of scarce resources to identified critical programs and projects with the following targets: to improve the quality and affordability of education available to citizens at all levels in order to produce the articulate and skilled manpower required for the economic transformation of the state”.

The governor added that the current situation in the country has invited leaders to rethink the basic suppositions of our relationship with the citizens, stressing that leaders should continue to carry on in the belief that they are doing their best and citizens should be glad for whatever they can get, given the present challenges of leadership.

“The truth is that leadership has a social contract with the led that is in most respects akin to a marriage”, he said.

However, governor Bello commended the people of the state for their patient and cooperation in their efforts to reposition the state for improved “sustainability and liveability”.

In his remarks, the speaker of Kogi State House of  Assembly, Hon. Kolawole Mathew said the lawmakers will continue to provide avenues for the legislature and executive to collaborate to improve the economy of the state.

While commending Governor Bello for managing the state to his best ability with a positive impact on the people in the state, he implored him to sign into law all the bills passed into law by the lawmakers, especially the one on financial autonomy for state legislators which was passed by the lawmakers months ago.
