The Surveyor General of the Federation SGoF Samuel Taiwo said that Nigeria must pay attention to the critical roles of surveyors in the development of the country.

He also said that there can be no better time than now for Nigerian society to appreciate the place of surveying and mapping in our national and strategic planning.

He, however, acknowledged the support of the current administration to geospatial matters, as being demonstrated by the Minister of Works and Housing, Mr Babatunde Raji Fashola.

The Surveyor General of the Federation gave this charge at the Fellows Investiture Ceremony of the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors (NIS), in Abuja.

Surv Taiwo said that it will not be wrong to observe that for many years, due attention has not been given to the critical role of the surveyors.

He said: “The use of geospatial data is fundamental to national planning and every physical development, OSGoF has since taken the frontline in clamouring for the use of data in our national development planning and implementation. As I speak, our Data Centre is almost ready for commissioning.

“We intend to provide easy easy access to geospatial data for various stakeholders across the country. On this note, I on behalf of OSGoF crave the indulgence and support of these distinguished Nigerians honoured by this Fellowship today and indeed the cooperation of NIS and other critical stakeholders”.

He also explained that the Fellows Investiture Ceremony is not only timely, but a bold and patriotic call to surveyors in the country to redouble efforts in the Nigerian Project.

While saying that the essence of the fellowship award is to promote excellence, Surv Taiwo said, “We owe our country and humanity, in general, the onerous task of combining efforts to build an enviable society of sustainable development”. He concluded that the Surveyors are obligated to contribute their quota in order to better the general conditions of living in the society.
