Former President, Olusegun Obasanjo, yesterday said that the re-election of the President of Ghana, Nana Akufo-Addo, for the second term in office is a testimony of his performance

Obasanjo, who stated this in a congratulatory letter which was contained in a press release made available to newsmen in Abeokuta, the state capital by his Media Aide, Kehinde Akinyemi urged the re-elected president to be magnanimous in victory.

Akufo-Addo of the New Patriotic Party, NPP, polled 6,730,413 votes to defeat his long time rival, John Mahama of the National Democratic Congress, NDC, who scored 6,214,889 votes at the election.

But, the ex-president, while congratulating Akufo-Addo and the people of Ghana, urged him to take leadership and explore all available means both in his country and other parts of Africa to secure safe, effective, available, and affordable COVID-19 vaccines for all Ghanaians and their African brothers and sisters.

He charged him to remain as enthusiastic, as energetic, as focused, and as committed as he had been in the last four years in serving the people of Ghana and indeed the rest of Africa for the next four years again.

Obasanjo, who cautioned the president of Ghana not to lose sight of his determination to have his country beyond aid, had before the election wrote to the leadership of the two political parties, NPP and NDC on the need for a peaceful election in the country.

“Your re-election by the people of Ghana to govern the country for another term of four years is a testimony of your performance in office so far and I believe that you will remain as enthusiastic, as energetic, as focused, and as committed as you have been in the last four years in serving the people of Ghana and indeed the rest of Africa for the next four years. I pray that God will grant you even more success in your second term.”

“I encourage you to take leadership and explore all available means both in Ghana and in the rest of Africa to secure safe, effective, available, and affordable COVID-19 vaccines for all Ghanaians and their African brothers and sisters. But in doing so, I urge you not to lose sight of your determination to have a “Ghana beyond aid”.

“You have been re-elected at a crucial time when the world is emerging from the socio-economic devastation of the COVID-19 pandemic. Thankfully, there have been breakthroughs in developing a vaccine against the deadly virus.”

“Once again, congratulations on your re-election as President of the Republic of Ghana, and may God give you even more wisdom and strength to lead your great country. Please accept the assurances of my highest regards and best wishes.” the letter added
