As the 2021 general election to elect a replacement for the incumbent President General of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, Chief Nnia Nwodo, draws nearer, one of the main contesters of the PG position, Dr. Joe Nworgu, has said that he was very much in the race.

“I am determined to contest the election any day it is fixed.  I have the support of over 80% of the people.  I am still very much in the race,” Nworgu declares.

The former secretary-general of Ohanaeze Ndigbo, who disclosed this in a chat with journalists in Enugu, Tuesday said some prominent people, including governors, have made some overtures to impress on him to back down from the race but said he is determined to go ahead.

“I have been approached by people that matter to drop my ambition but I will not do so.  To do that will amount to selling out and some people will say that I have been settled or bought over. No, I’ll go ahead and contest.  Should I lose, I’ll return to my country home in peace.  I may not even go to court,” he said.

Asked why the venue of the election was shifted from Enugu to Owerri, Nworgu said it could be part of the unseen hands to see that he does not scale through.

“I know that I am most qualified for the position but some people may not like me to be there.  But I tell you solemnly, I have the support of the people,” he said.

Former NIIA boss, Dr. George Obiozor is another strong contender to the Ohanaeze leadership but Nworgu may have an edge having been the former scribe of the Igbo apex cultural organization.

It is gathered that in a free, fair, and credible election, Nworgu is likely to carry the day.
