Kaduna State governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has hinted that governors in the northern region of Nigeria will soon ban open grazing by herdsmen across the region.
El-Rufai gave the hint today at the national secretariat of All Progressive Congress, APC, shortly after a brief meeting with the APC Director Organizing.
While reacting to the recent feud between governors Samuel Ortom of Benue State and Bala Mohammed of Bauchi State, over the farmers-herders crisis and the right of herders to bear arms, the Kaduna State governor attributed the spat between the two governors to difference of opinion and not a fundamental difference.
Recall that the spat between governors Ortom and Bala reached a boiling point on Monday when Governor Samuel Ortom of Benue State accused his Bauchi State counterpart, Bala Mohammed of being part of a terrorist group terrorizing the country and urged Nigerians to hold him responsible if anything happens to him.
Ortom argued that Mohammed’s defence of Fulani herdsmen carrying AK-47 indicated that he was part of an attempt to assassinate him.
This was part of his reaction to Governor Mohammed’s statement in which he said herders can carry AK-47 to defend themselves.
But the Kaduna State governor disclosed that there was an ongoing meeting called by Northern Governors Forum to resolve the issue and both governors were in attendance.
He assured that the Northern governors’ Forum is committed to ending the movement of cattle and herders from place to place stressing that once that is done, the clashes between farmers and herders will be reduced significantly.
El-Rufai said: “I just left Kaduna, we had a meeting of the Northern State Governors, Bauchi State Governor, Benue Governor was there, it will be sorted out. it could be differences in opinion. It is not fundamental. We are all committed to solving the problem of movement up and down by the herders because once we solve that problem, the clashes between farmers and herders will reduce significantly.
“It will be sorted out, there will always be differences in opinion but not fundamental. The Northern State Governors Forum is committed to ending the nomadic movement of cattle and people in the shortest possible time, and we are all working.”
