In a bid to reposition the party to win future elections, Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, South-East zone has elected new leadership to pilot the affairs of the party for the next four years.
A former acting chairman of the party, Chief Ali Odefa weekend emerged as the new South East zonal chairman, having scored the highest vote.
Chief Odefa was elected by zonal PDP delegates at the weekend during the PDP zonal Elective Congress at Okpara Square, Enugu, Enugu State.
Other elected include; Zonal Secretary, Chief Ugwu James, Treasurer, Engr. Emeka Okeke, Financial secretary, Casmir Ugwu, Zonal organising secretary, Micheal Ahumebe, Publicity Secretary, Engr. Augustine Elechukwu, Zonal Auditor, Lazarus Okpe and many others.
Chairman of the electoral planning committee, Dr, Ibrahim Umar who declared the election result, urged elected members to deliver the party in all elective positions.
Presenting his speech on behalf of the other elected members, Chief Odefa, expressed joy for electing him to serve as zonal chairman, stressing that they would take the affairs of the party seriously and take it to the next level.
He promised to recover all the places the party had lost in the past, stressing that they would take over Anambra state by November 2021.
“I am happy today that the same place I was humiliated in last five year is the place I was humbled. I contested for the position and lost. Today I am elected. My promise today is that I shall strive hard to make sure together with my colleagues to put the party interest first before any other interest. We shall treat all men equal, we shall not be biased in all activities,” he said.
Speaking immediately after casting his vote, the senator representing Ebonyi central, Sen, Obinna Ogba commended the organizers for conducting a peaceful election.
“The election was very interesting. It’s like the election we had in Port Harcourt. People are freely expressing their right to vote. The election was done to the glaring of people and nobody will complain about this election. We thank the organizers for organizing a free, fair and credible election”, He said.
While reacting to a question, how the decamping of Ebonyi State governor, David Umahi would affect PDP in Ebonyi state, Ogba said that they lost the governor, not the people. He said that the people of Ebonyi state are still with PDP, stressing that PDP would win Ebonyi state in the next election.
He wished Gov. Umahi well in APC, praying that he would get whatever he wanted to get in APC and they would also get theirs in PDP.
“We lost the governor but didn’t lose the people. The governor is our governor and he is just one person. The people are still with us,” he said.
The Congress was attended by prominent PDP members in the zone such as the leader and Governor of Enugu State, His Excellency, Rt. Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, the Deputy Governor of Abia State, Rt. Hon. Ude Okochukwu, the PDP National Organising Secretary, Col. Austin Akobundu, the National Youth Leader, Rt. Hon. Sunday Udeh-Okoye, former Governors of Ebonyi, Anambra, Imo states, Senator Sam Egwu, Peter Obi and Rt. Hon. Emeka Ihedioha respectively, National and State Assembly members from the zone, Barr. Olisa Metu, Chris Ubah, and other esteemed leaders of the party in the zone, including the new returnee in Anambra State, Hon. Tony Nwoye, and many others.
