People living with disabilities in the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) on Wednesday made case for the amendment of twenty sections of the party’s constitution for effective inclusion and integration of persons with disabilities in the party.
This was contained in a position paper presented on Wednesday by Dr James David Lalu, the representative of Special People in the Caretaker Extra-Ordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC) of the party to the party’s Constitution Review Committee.
Lalu said that their position was an outcome of a two-day strategy workshop by leaders from across the country to examine the participation of persons with disabilities in the party organs and electoral processes of the party in Abuja late last year.
According to Lalu, “the workshop with participants including the former APC National Disabled Leader, Misbahu Lawan Didi, Senior Special Disability Matters, Dr. Samuel Ankeli, zonal persons with disabilities leaders and other stakeholders discussed barriers to the inclusion and integration of persons with disabilities in the party and developed twenty recommendations for amendment in the party constitution to improve the effective participation of persons with disabilities in the party”.
Commending the People with disabilities for their commitment to the development and growth of the party since inception, the Chairman of the Constitution Review Committee, Prof. Tahir Mamman said his Committee will look into the areas raised.
Mamman noted that the present administration led by President Muhamadu Buhari has been so much concerned about the welfare of the people with disabilities, hence the establishment of the National Commission for Persons With Disabilities.
He said his Committee will consider clause by clause every issues raised in the paper presented.
The Women and youth wings of the party also presented position papers to the Committee.
