Police in Akwa Ibom State have arrested a secondary school student, David Okon, for allegedly stabbing to death a fellow student, Solomon Bassey, at West Itam Secondary School in Uyo.

It also arrested 54 suspected cultists in separate locations, even as it called for increased parental care and guidance on children.

A statement from the State Police Public Relations Officer, Mr. Odiko Macdon, yesterday in Uyo, said the death of Bassey was a result of a rival cult clash between SS2 and SS3 students in the school.

It said 31 of the cultists were arrested in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area, 16 in Oruk Anam, and seven in Etinan.

Meanwhile, the Commissioner of Police, Mr. Andrew Amienghene while decrying the level of moral decadence in some schools and the society called on parents to inculcate family values in their children.

Amienghene said the proscription order of the state government on secret cults would be enforced to the latter.

While warning those involved in cultism to renounce their membership, he urged members of the public to go about their lawful businesses and give timely information to the police and other security agencies to curb the menace.
