Minister of State, Education, Dr. Chukwuemeka Nwajiuba, with his counterpart from the Ministry of Youth and Sport Development, Dr. Sunday Dare, were yesterday kicked-off the historical Principals’ Cup for Secondary School Football in Nigeria.

FB IMGThe event which took place at the popular Agege Stadium, Lagos State, also had in attendance: the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Com. Philip Shaibu, Super Eagles legend, Daniel Amokachi, who is an SA to the Minister of Sports, as well as Nigerian Olympian, Mary Onyali.

Declaring the competition open, Nwajiuba said that the partnership between the two Ministries will help in restoring back-to-life the much neglected Competion.FB IMG

His words: “I’m excited to partner with my brother and colleague, Honorable Minister Sports and Youth Development in reviving the Principals Cup, a platform I believe will not just promote sports and discover young talent but will serve as another avenue to develop our young ones while attracting out-of -school children into our classes.”

It would be recalled that the Sport Minister, who lauded the partnership, had on September 21, 2020, revealed plans to expand the competition beyond its traditional football base and add events in Athletics, Table Tennis, Boxing and Badminton to it, a move, he said will help to revamp the competition.

FB IMGThe Principals’ Cup, a historical popular tournament among secondary school students in Nigeria that was established in the 1960s, starts at a local level, then states before it gets to the national level.
The likes of Stephen Keshi, Daniel Amokachi, Henry Nwosu, Sunday Oliseh, Joseph Dosu and Jonathan Akpoborie, played in the competition on their way to their respective football careers.

This year’s tournament commenced with the first match between Igbobi Secondary School and the Government College Kaduna ending in a 1-1 draw.
