Senate President Ahmed Lawan, has expedited action on the request of President Muhammadu Buhari for the confirmation of new service chiefs and screening of ambassadorial nominees, directing the joint committees on Army, Navy, Air force and Foreign Affairs to carry out the assignment within two weeks and report to the Senate in plenary.

The appointees for confirmation are Maj. Gen. Lucky lrabor, Chief of Defence Staff; Maj. Gen. Ibrahim Attahiru, Chief of Army Staff; Rear Admiral Awwal Gambo, Chief of Naval Staff; and Air Vice Marshal Isiaka Amao – Chief of Air Staff.

The chosen ones are to replace the former Chief of Defence Staff, General Abayomi Olonisakin; Chief of Army Staff, Lt-Gen. Tukur Buratai; Chief of Naval Staff, Vice Admiral Ibok Ibas; and Chief of Air Staff, Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar.

Lawan directed the committee on Foreign Affairs to screen the immediate past service chiefs who had been appointed by Buhari as career ambassadors.

President Buhari had recommended the immediate past service chiefs for career ambassador positions, a pronouncement which has largely been condemned by Nigerians, with many suggesting that the move is a deliberate attempt to shield the ex-service chiefs from the possible trial.
