(Senate Minority Leader)
Nigerian Senator, Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe was born today, March 1,
1955, in Aba, Abia state.
The now 65-year-old Senator got his WASSCE from Government College
Umuahia in 1974.
He went on to the University of Benin, where he received a bachelor’s
degree in economics in 1979 and a master’s degree in economics in 1982.
Abaribe was elected to the Senate in 2007 and has been representing
Abia South Senatorial District till date.
He is the Vice-Chairman of the Senate Committee on Inter-Parliamentary
Affairs. He is also a member of the Committees on the Independent
National Electoral Commission, Senate Services, and Works.
Before 2007, Senator Abaribe was Abia State’s Deputy Governor from May
29, 1999, after Orji Uzor Kalu’s 1999 election to the Governorship
until he resigned on March 7, 2003 – before the third attempt to
impeach him became a reality.
Senator Abaribe last year stirred national controversy when he
called for the resignation of President Muhammadu Buhari over
the unprecedented upsurge in insecurity across the country.
According to him, “We did not vote the IG of police, we did not vote
the Chief of Staff, or other security chiefs, we voted the government
of APC in 2015 and re-elected them in 2019 because they told us they
have the key to security.
“Today, the APC government has failed because people are being killed
anyhow. If you want to deal with a matter, you first go to the head.
“We can go to the APC government and ask this government to resign.
“And we want to tell the government that if it does not resign, we
shall have no option than to go with stones to pursue it.”
Some political observers in the country said the recent sack of
Service Chiefs and federal government’s move to rejig the security
architecture in the country, though coming belatedly, can be
attributed to the call by Senator Abaribe for President Buhari to sit
up and secure the country as the Commander-in-Chief.
Senator Abaribe holds the title Nwadiohanma Ngwa.
