SPEAKER, House of Representatives, Femi Gbajabiamila, is to set up a trust fund that will cater to the children of the recently killed vendor, Ifeanyi Okereke.
Gbajabiamila had yesterday paid a visit to the Abuja Newspapers Distributors Association, ANDA, and Newspaper Vendors Association, Abuja, NVAA, to address them on the recent tragic killing of their colleague by his security detail last Thursday and condole with them.
“Those children have now become my children. I have made commitments to the family to train them until they become adults,” he said.
According to the speaker, a trust fund has already been set up to see to their welfare until they reach adulthood.
Earlier, on Saturday, Gbajabiamila visited the wife and children of Okereke to pay his respects and condole with them.
Reiterating his sympathy over the incident, he described it as a great tragedy which has in no small measure affected the lives of many in ways difficult for anyone to understand.
He added that all his engagements have been canceled, as it would be inappropriate to be mourning and celebrating or attending joyous events.
Though, the speaker had originally claimed that his security detail had “shot into the air to disperse them (the newspaper vendors),” the post on his office’s official Twitter account on Sunday night changed the narrative.
“At the time I thought it was just a shot into the air, it was later that night that I got the full list of what had happened,” acknowledging that his detail had in fact shot into the crowd.
Meanwhile, the State Security Service, SSS, had earlier announced that the alleged officer, who perpetrated the act, Abdullahi M. Hassan, has already been detained.
