Leaders and concerned members of Labour Party (LP) in Niger state have called on the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) to set machinery in motion to strengthen the party for the 2023 general elections.

In a statement jointly signed by Alhaji Abdullahi Jabi and Mr Abdulwahid Adeniran, the state Chairman and Secretary of LP, said there was need to restructure the party for competitive elections in 2023.

Accordding to the statement, “we are calling on the national leadership of the NLC to immediately put machinery in place toward holding expanded national stakeholders meeting of labour party members in Nigeria to deliberate further on restructuring the party for competitive elections in 2023.

“The stakeholders resolved that this is the right time to unite the party members and position it for 2023 general elections as the third force platform for Nigerians to salvage the challenges confronting the nation.”

The statement proposed a 12 man reconciliation committee to reconcile all aggrieved members before the general elections to enable the party achieve its objectives as alternative platform for Nigerians to achieve better governance.

It said that all pending cases in the Courts against the factional national chairman, late Alhaji Abdukadir Abdulsalam be withdrawn to give opportunity for alternative dispute resolution in the interest of members.

The statement alleged that the imposition of Mariam Ogah by some members as factional national chairman of LP violates the party constitution.

“The process is faculty and unacceptable, therefore we dissociate ourselves from it,” it said.

It called on leaders and members of the party including aggrieved members to utilise the opportunity to rebuild the party in the interest of the public.

“This meeting moved a motion for action within 24 hours calling on the president NLC, Mr Ayuba Wabba to commence consultation and holding stakeholders meeting to chart a cause for our party.

“The veteran, Chief Dan Nwanyanwu now of the Zenith Labour Party should be prevailed upon to come back to build the LP because his legacies remain the best administration in the party.
