The leadership of United Patriots, UP, has attributed the incessant attacks on INEC offices in some parts of the country to the failure of the Commission to uphold the will of the Nigerian electorates as expressed through the ballots.
The party, which is among the 22 political parties recently deregistered by the electoral body, maintained that the continued attacks and assault on the Commission’s facilities and offices across the States of the federation is not unconnected with the failure of the electoral body and the Courts to uphold the free Will of the Nigerian people as expressed at the ballots during elections.
United Party’s position was contained in a statement issued Wednesday and signed by its National Chairman, Barr. Chukwudi Ezeobika.
In the statement made available to Nigerian Pilot,
the party also condemned the declaration of election results and imposition of candidates by Nigerian courts describing it as immoral and retrogressive.
According to the party, these attacks on INEC facilities and offices are a clear indication of a complete failure of Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud led INEC to give Nigerians a free, fair and credible election, adding that it further affirms total loss of faith and belief by Nigerians in the electoral body as presently constituted.
The UP stressed that the disregard and disobedience to subsisting Court judgements by a democratic institution such as INEC portends a grave danger to Nigeria’s democracy.
“Such flagrant disregard and disobedience to subsisting Court judgements by Prof. Yakubu Mahmoud – led INEC, especially the judgement unanimously delivered by the Court of Appeal on the 10th of August, 2020, ordering INEC to relist our great Party (United Patriots) together with 21 others, has the potential to undermine the Rule of Law and the Nation’s democracy, as such judgement has neither been set aside nor stayed by any Order of Court whatsoever,” the party averred.
The United Party also showed it strong dissapproval of the notion that the Courts have the moral authority to uphold or upturn an election validly conducted in Nigeria especially when the conduct of such elections are generally accepted by the people.
