Having played opposition in Anambra State where the ruling All Progressive Grand Alliance (APGA) has dominated the political stage for over one and half decade, the opposition People Democratic Party (PDP), in the state is not leaving any stone unturned in its quest to take over the reign of power in the coming Governorship elections in Anambra, writes ~ LINUS ALEKE
“Now the whole world had one language and a common speech. As people moved eastward, they found a plain in Shinar and settled there.
“They said to each other, ‘Come, let’s make brick and bake them thoroughly.’ They used brick instead of stone, and tar for mortar.
“Then they said, ‘Come, let us build ourselves a city, with a tower that reaches to the heavens, so that we may make a name for ourselves; otherwise we will be scattered over the face of the whole earth.’
But the Lord came down to see the city and the tower the people were building.
“If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.
“Come, let us go down and confuse their language so they will not understand each other.”
The above conversation between mortals and inmortals in christian sacred literature, precisely in Genesis 11, underscores the imperative of unity amongst humanity, families, countries, ethnic nationalities or even political parties.
This however, explains the wisdom in the popular aphorism, “united we stand and divided we fall,” and it is on the premise of this that members of most ancient confraternities take serious oath to strengthen the bond of unity amongst themselves and guard against infiltration by external forces.
It is also in line with this incontrovertible ancient wisdom that the Igbo inferred that, “when a group urinates at the same spot it will foam,” and that, “a single broom can easily be broken into pieces but if it is in bunch, it becomes difficult to break.
Nonetheless, it is on the potency of the aforesaid that political parties, often have internal mechanism to resolve dispute to guard against disunity. This internal mechanism include, setting up of appeal panels and reconciliation committees to allow members ventilate their angers or reconcile aggrieved members shortly after party convention or primary elections to pave way for a united front.
This is so because they would not want to approach the general elections with a divided house. Divided house it is said is a recipe for anti party activities and abysmal performance in a general election.
It is on the basis of the following and other dangers associated with disunity that the frontline Aspirant on the platform of PDP in the coming Anambra elections Dr. Ifedi Okwenna is leading a campaign for a united PDP family in Anambra State.
His resolve to champion this campaign ahead of the election is not unconnected with his total grasp of the wisdom in the thesis of the inmortals about the mortals that, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them,” Gen 11:6.
While on tour of Ekwusigo Local Government Area, as part of his campaigns strategy, the Governorship hopeful Dr. Ifedi Okwenna called on the PDP family to unite and work hard to takeover governance of the State in this year’s election.
He posited that 16 years of opposition politics is enough for a party that visibly dominate every other party in the State.
The former Commissioner for Environment, Mineral Resources, Science and Technology in Anambra State, made this call while addressing the large gathering of PDP members who came to welcome him, as part of his tour of Ekwusigo Local Government.
He tasked PDP members to unite to form a formidable front, strong enough to smoke the ruling APGA Government out of the Agu Awka Government House in the November 6, election.
Dr. Okwenna reminded them that despite the wide acceptance of PDP in Anambra State today, nothing should be taken for chance.
“PDP must ensure that the best of the aspirants capable of winning the election is nominated to carry the banner of our party.
“PDP candidate should not be the person that only have the capacity to win the Governorship primaries, but one with great capacity, network and Statewide acceptability to win the Governorship elections later this year,” he further advised.
Dr Okwenna told Ndi Ekwusigo to support him in the Party primaries not only because he is a member of Igwe’s cabinet in Ozubulu and therefore a homeboy, but also the best qualified Aspirant in the race.
“My knowledge of Anambra State, my experience and level of preparedness put me well above others and I am going to give you good and inclusive governance,” Dr Okwenna said.
He lamented that the Ozubulu Industrial Complex, Ozubulu Machine Tool Industry proposed to be built in Ozubulu by previous governments in both old and new Anambra States, and later abandoned, have now been disposed, by the present Government.
He assured Ndi Ekwusigo that when elected Governor, their Local Government will be designated as Industrial hub as well as one of the Agricultural belts of the State, stressing that Anambra State Industrial Development Centre shall be built in Ekwusigo.
The Centre he said, “shall promote research, develop templates, build molds, design machinery and component parts and act as incubation and handsome centres for young technicians, technologist, engineers and industrialists”.
Welcoming Dr. Okwenna to Ekwusigo, the Local Government Party Chairman, Engr Gozie Igwe, commended him for his innovative and idea driven campaign.
Engr Igwe said he’s not in doubt of Okwenna’s competence and capacity to provide good governance if elected.
The Minority Leader of the Anambra State House of Assembly, who hails from Ekwusigo, Hon Onyebuchi Offor, thanked the aspirant for the tour of the Local Government, and for the issue based campaign which he has been running.
He enjoined him to work hard to pick the ticket of the party as his emergence will smoothen the Party’s pathway to victory in the election scheduled for November, 2021.
