The Bayelsa state government on Thursday accused the federal government of the oil and gas sector of the discomfort, environmental degradation, and pollution in the Niger Delta region.
Governor Douyo Diri made the remarks at the closing of the 5th National council on Hydrocarbons in yenagoa, observed that Bayelsa is a very safe environment to live in.
Represented by the secretary to the state government, Rt Hon. Friday Kobowei Benson, Diri thanked the organizers for having the program in the state.
He said, “Bayelsa is a very safe environment to live in, our hospitality has never been doubted and that was what gave birth to discovering the rich oil in the state.
“In 1998, when I was a local government chairman, in a particular forum, a question was raised about development in the area and the answer given was that the development is in the pipelines.
” From that time till now, the pipelines have not rested. We were not known for kidnapping”.
He assured the federal government of the state’s readiness to partner with them, urging that the narrative is changed.
In his keynote address the minister of state for petroleum Resources, Chief Timipre Sylva give glory to God and thanked everyone that made the council meeting a success.
” The year 2020 has been a challenging year with the outbreak of the covid19 pandemic. Ensure to adhere to the guidelines of the Covid19 task force”.
The year 2020 according to the minister has been declared gas year, focusing on the development of the gas chain.
The permanent secretary of petroleum Resources Mr. Bitrus Bako averred that the last council meeting was held in Abuja, he commended the Bayelsa state government for the warm reception given them.
