UN Day 2022: IPC will work hard to promote peace, Head of Mission, UN IPC Nigeria Assures

Head of Mission, United Nations, International Peace Commission (IPC) Nigeria, Ambassador (Dr) Hussaini Coomassie assured that the IPC under his leadership will work hard to promote peace in Nigeria.

Amb Hussaini Coomassie said this in Abuja on Monday as he addressed a world press conference to mark United Nations Day 2022.

The UN day is celebrated on 24th October annually in significance of the entry into the UN Charter, a day that represents a symbol of hope for global unity, peace and prosperity, set aside by the UN to educate the public on issues of concern, to mobilize political will and resources to address global problems and to celebrate and reinforce achievements of humanity.

He also urged President Buhari not to hand over an insecure Nigeria to his successor come 2023.

He said, “IPC is established to serve humanity without discrimination of caste, color or creed as well as devoted to international peace and prosperity. It is an International Civil Society Organisation having more than 19,500 individual members and partner organisations around the globe.

“I know President Mohammadu Buhari has been working tirelessly in making sure he brings back peace and security to affected areas.

“As the leader of IPC in Nigeria, I want to see the president put more efforts in resolving security challenges and bring to book any individual or organizations, no matter how highly placed, found culpable in sponsoring or promoting insecurity in the country. The President should keep trying his best not to hand over an unsecured country to the incoming administration.

“Since my appointment, I have been having consultations with stakeholders locally and internationally to implement the mandates of IPC.
IPC under my leadership will work hard to promote peace in Nigeria. It’s time to dialogue with all those that are ready to lay down arms and embrace peace.”

He quoted António Guterres, the UN Secretary General in his message for the UN Day 2022 commemoration as sying, “The United Nations is the product of hope. The hope and resolve following the Second World War to move beyond global conflict to global cooperation. Today, our organisation is being tested like never before. But the United Nations was made for moments like this.

“Now, more than ever, we need to bring to life the values and principles of the UN Charter in every corner of the world. By giving peace a chance and ending conflicts that jeopardize lives, futures and global progress.

“By working to end extreme poverty, reduce inequalities, and rescue the Sustainable Development Goals. By safeguarding our planet, including by breaking our addiction to fossil fuels and kickstarting the renewable energy revolution.

“And by finally balancing the scales of opportunity and freedom for women and girls and ensure human rights for all. As we mark UN Day, let us renew our hope and conviction in what humanity can achieve when we work as one, in global solidarity.”

“As the 2023 general elections campaign are ongoing, I will advise all the political parties to guard their utterances to avoid creating unnecessary tension by way of incitement, ” he added.
