A Non-Governmental Organisation, CLEEN Foundation, has described an accountable justice system as fundamental element in efforts at addressing corruption and corrupt practices in the country.

“A functional and accountable justice system is key to addressing corruption and promote national development,” CLEEN Foundation Executive Director, Gad Peter, said on Tuesday in Sokoto.

He spoke at the opening of a training workshop on “The Implementation of Criminal Justice Legislations.”

He said that the programme was being implemented in collaboration with the Foundation’s partners and the MacArthur Foundation.

According to him, “corruption remains a major obstacle affecting all sectors of the economy,” adding that, “CLEEN
Foundation has begun the implementation of a two-year project on enhancing the accountability of Justice sector actors in the mitigation of corruption in Nigeria.”

Peter said, “by this new project, KLEEN seeks to consolidate efforts on enhancing the implementation of the ACJA, 2015 and deepening the tools for accountability developed and initiated under phase one of it’s ACJA project for purposes of improving accountability of justice actors and transparency in Nigeria’s criminal justice system.

“The training is building on the gains made by CLEEN Foundation on the administration of criminal justice law intervention in eight states of the country, on digitization of court proceedings on corruption-related cases in Nigeria.

“The overall goal of the project is to contribute to the reduction of corruption, promote judicial transparency in processing corruption cases and enhance accountability among practitioners in the criminal justice system in Nigeria.”
