The Better Health for Rural Women, Children and Internally Displaced Foundation (BERWO) a pet project of the Wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs. Mary-Maudline Nwifuru is prepared to administer a free vaccine against the Human Papilloma (Virus) in the state.

The foundation in collaboration with Ebonyi Primary Health Care Development Agency would embark on the campaign on May 27.

Mrs Nwifuru in a press release by her Chief Press Secretary, Nnenna Oshibe said that the vaccine is targeted to be administered to young girls between 9 to 14 years and all eligible children.

The Wife of the governor made this known yesterday, during an official inauguration and installation of the BERWO committee in Ikwo Local Government Area of the state.

She noted that the campaign would last for five days after which the vaccine would be incorporated into the routine immunisation schedule.

Nwifuru described the virus as a deadly disease that affects part of the womb of women and causes cancer in males but is preventable through vaccination.

According to her, the foundation had commenced enrollment of people living with scrotal hernia for surgical operation across the 13 Local Government Areas of the state.

“My pet project and notable health partners in the state will also commence screening and treatment of early-stage cervical cancer. Health is second on our priority list as a government. We will give our best health care service delivery”, Mrs. Nwifuru said.

The Chairman of the local government, Barr Sunday Nwankwo appreciated the First Lady for coming to inaugurate the BERWO committee in Ikwo LGA and assured her of their unalloyed support. He also announced that the pavilion will be named BERWO Pavillon when renovated.

In his speech, the Attorney General and Commissioner of Bernard Odo assured that the Chief Judge of the state had designed six courts, one high and magistrate court in the North, central and south parts of the state to prosecute gender-based violence cases.

The event featured the inauguration of the BERWO committee to help enhance the quality of health and foster sustainable development in the area.

Other activities featured conferment of a Chieftaincy title of ‘Ada Ugo 1 of Ikwo Nnoyo’ on Mrs. Nwifuru.
