2 drown, many injured as Bus plunges into Lagos Lagoon

Two passengers have reportedly drowned after they fell into the lagoon from a commercial bus on Third Mainland Bridge in Lagos State.

Other passengers sustained varying degrees of injuries from the incident, it was gathered.

The crash occurred on Eid-el-fitri when Muslims are celebrating the end of Ramadan.

It was gathered that the driver of the 20-seater bus with number plate FKJ 872 YA was trying to avert plunging the vehicle into the lagoon when the passengers fell off.

Southwest Coordinator for the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Ibrahim Farinloye confirmed the incident.

“The bus swerved uncontrollably, off the road and eventually hit the bridge rails and caused the two passengers to be flung off into the lagoon.

“The victims, an adult male and female, are being searched for by the Marine Police. The crashed vehicle has been towed to Adeniji Adele police station,” he said.

He said a rescue team has commenced search-and-rescue operations.
