Following the upsurge in drugs related issues in Katsina State, the Commander, National Drugs Law Enforcement Agency, NDLEA, Mohammed Bashir Ibrahim, has advocated that parents should enforce mandatory drugs tests before giving their children out their children in marriage.
He made this known while briefing reporters in Katsina.
Bashir cited instances where husbands tricked their spouses into selling drugs such as cannabis in the guise of helping their husbands businesses.
He said, “the trend which we have noticed over time is the involvement of women not just using drugs but helping their spouses selling drugs within the State.
“There is this particular woman in our custody now, one Rabi Musa, the husband, though at large, one Nura Sani normally brought the drugs, cannabis, to be specific and she is the one that normally helped him to sell the drugs and she didn’t keep the bulk of the drugs in her house, she used to keep it in her sister’s place and her in-law, Suleiman Musa is in charge of it and we are able to arrest Rabi Musa along Sabon Titi Kwado with about 4kg cannabis sativa and we went to Zainab Musa, wife of the prime suspect in Birhin Quarters here in Katsina and found another 3kg of same cannabis sativa.
“Both Rabi Musa and Suleiman are facing prosecution and have been charged to court.
“Our take here is, parents should be aware of the type of prospective in-laws they give their daughters.
“You feel somebody has money and you don’t know the source of their income, you don’t know the danger you are exposing your daughter.
“And further more, we are still recommending, integrity test, some areas are doing it just as you are doing genotype test for intending couples which parents are doing it now in Katsina, I think we can extend to drugs test.”
